 Chairman Qin Xiao is invited as guest of honor for “Dialogue” program of CCTV.
This is a Chinese company which gone through a
hundred years of trials and hardships. She was
founded in 1872 during the Westernization Movement
in the late Qing dynasty. This is a century-old
enterprise which created numerous precedents in
China. She has presented one aspect of Chinese
domestic industry and commerce from early stage to
maturity. This enterprise is China Merchants Group
headquartered in Hong Kong.
China Merchants Group, which spanned three
centuries, has celebrated her 130’s anniversary.
Whether in the industrial and commercial sectors
during her early stages or the series of reforms
initiated by Shekou industrial zone, the window of
reform and open-up, China Merchants Group has
created numerous precedents in Chinese history and
ultimately become a diversified modern enterprise
group with total assets value of HK$ 5.4 billion and
HK$ 120 billion of assets value under its
administration.
On March 9th 2003, Qin Xiao, Chairman of China
Merchants Group, a top manager who studied for PhD
in Economics at Cambridge University at the age of
50, has been invited to the studio of “Dialogue”
program. How can history and reality be combined so
as to shake off the shackles of old ideas through
system innovation? How can China Merchants Group and
Qin Xiao, which stroll about between tradition and
modernity, stride forward into a new glorious era?
Qin Xiao has given brilliant reply, whether
regarding the reform and development of large SOE
under new historical conditions, or regarding the
reflection of a scholar in academic field and for
the philosophy of life.

 “A Hundred-years
of China Merchants” is a music and dance epic
produced to commemorate the 130 anniversary of China
Merchants.
Born on 26 December 1872, China Merchants has
gone through 130 years of trials and hardships.
China Merchants Group has produced the music and
dance epic “A Hundred-years of China Merchants”
based on her historic path. This epic consists of
“Prologue- under the Blue Banner”, “Founding by
the side of Huangpu River”, “Set Sails for a Long
Voyage”, “Sinking the Ships to Support the
Anti-Japanese Forces”, “Marching on toward the
Bright Future”, “Embracing Spring”,
“Epilogue-Creating New Splendor”. Through singing,
dancing and poetry, the epic artistically revealed
China Merchants’ century-old development path
together with the growth of the motherland. The
epic eulogized China Merchants glorious course
toward economic prosperity and rejuvenation of
China. |
 The 16-parts TV series “The
Time of Passion” is co-produced by China Merchants
Group and CCTV.
This TV series is directed by well-known director
Jin Tao. It has artistically revealed the hardships
endured by China Merchants as it took the lead in
investing in the mainland at the beginning of reform
and opening-up, setting up China’s first economic
development zone—Shekou industrial zone, and changed
a coastal fishing village into a modern seaside
town. The main characters are played by well-known
Chinese actors and actresses like Li Youbin, Liu
Peiqi, Xie Yuan, Mei Ting. With a strong cast and
superb performance, this TV series has revived the
time of passion and displayed glory of China
Merchants.

 "Mast of the East" was schemed by China Merchants and jointly produced by China Central Television Station and Shekou Television Station, and was broadcast on CCTV prior to Hong Kong's return to China's sovereignty.
"Mast of the East" consisted of two parts, with each part lasted around 30 minutes. This film themed on China Merchants' history over a century and used China's modern history as the background setting. The film has selected relevant people and events and specific corporate activities to depict the entrepreneuring spirit of China Merchants' employees. It has eulogized China Merchants' employees' desire to dedicate to the revitalization of China. It has praised China Merchants' contribution to the economic development in China's modern history and to the reform and opening-up of China. It has demonstrated the dynamics brought to the state owned enterprises by reform and opening-up and the growth path for state enterprises in market economy. |
 The documentary
“Shekou Sonata” is produced by the Pearl River film
studio. It displayed the founding and growth of
China Merchants Shekou industrial zone. This
documentary has won the best documentary award of
the Ninth “ Golden Rooster” award for Chinese films. |
